Deadline to Apply for the 2012 Howard Larman Memorial Scholarship is August 3!

Would you love to attend FAR-West but just don't seem to have the funds available at this time? If so, then you may be a candidate for a scholarship award through the Howard Larman Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The Howard Larman Fund was created specifically to give partial and full registration scholarships to artists who would otherwise be unable to attend due to financial hardship. Artists interested in applying for the 2012 scholarship may submit the online application by August 3, 2012. (Electronic submission preferred.)

Download and save the application to your computer. Then, type the information on the downloaded Word doc, save and email it to: Susie Glaze <hilonesome@aol.com> by August 3, 2012. If you are unable to complete and submit via email, you can print a copy and mail it to Susie Glaze, c/o Hilonesome Music, 848 North Pass Ave., Burbank, CA  91505

Application Requirements: (All applications and scholarship recipient information is kept in strict confidence.)

• Applicant must be an aspiring or currently performing artist
• Applicant must be a current member of Folk Alliance or become a member prior to the conference. (Additional support may be available from the Larman Fund for artists who are unable to afford FA membership.)
• Applicant must demonstrate a reasonable and current financial hardship that would prevent them from attending the conference.

Application deadline for 2012 FAR-West Conference is August 3, 2012.  The Larman Scholarship Committee (consisting of the committee chair, FAR-West treasurer and one board member-at-large) will review all submissions. All submissions and award information will remain anonymous. The chairperson will notify all applicants and provide awardees with a registration code by August 31st, 2012. Funds will be dispersed once the awardee has registered for the conference.* (If an applicant has already registered and paid, s/he will receive a refund.)

* Awards are contingent upon donations received to the scholarship fund.

If you would like to help others through this program, donations to the Howard Larman Memorial Scholarship Fund are accepted at various levels starting at $25.  Email Julie Paris julie@jrp-graphics.com or call 818.707.2179 to make a donation.  Donations can also be made when registering for the conference.

PGS Performing Opportunities

Musicians who are registered for FAR-West 2012 can now find the list of the current FAR-West Private Guerilla Showcase rooms posted on the website.

The listing includes contact information for those hosts who are open to booking requests from artists. You should email those hosts directly to inquire about requirements for showcasing in their rooms. Remember, these are privately sponsored showcases and most hosts charge a fee for showcase slots.

The PGS web list will be updated regularly as new rooms are reserved and a summary will be sent to FAR-West lists every week or so. Check the website periodically to see the most up-to-date list of PGS performing opportunities.

New Voices in the West PGS Room

Recognizing that newcomers to Folk Alliance and the FAR-West Conference can find it challenging to get showcase bookings their first time at the conference, FAR-West sponsors the New Voices in the West Private Guerrilla Showcase Room. New Voices performances are held during PGS times on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Performers must be attending their first FAR-West conference to be eligible and showcase spots are based on the order that people register for the conference.

New Voices spots are limited and we expect that they will fill up by the end of July. So, if you are a first time conference attendee and want to perform in New Voices, Register Now (Early Bird Registration Link) and indicate your interest with an email to New Voices Coordinators, Gary and Kathy Lynch: NewVoicesPGS@camarillocafe.com. They will be in touch with you to confirm.

To All FAR-West 2012 (Registered) Musicians

Because FAR-West encompasses all of us, we would like to pre-showcase the artists and bands who will attend FAR-West 2012.

So, once you have registered for the conference, musicians/bands should send one (1) MP3 of 7mbs or less to Jeanette Lundgren at farwestfolk@gmail.com with the following information:
* name or band name
* title of song
* title of CD
* year and label (if applicable)
* a representative jpg of yourself or your band or the CD cover
* a link to your website (or somewhere your music can be listened to)
* your email address
* your written permission to post this song/photo/information on the FAR-West Reverbnation site (which auto-posts to our website and our facebook), streaming only, for up to one (1) year from the date of our adding your song to our player.

FAR-West Conference Registration Reminder

Here is your 3-weeks and counting-down till early-bird registration is over, folks! Don't let July get away from you without registering. Did you have a chance to look at the artists selected for the official showcases? Looks like a wonderful lineup to me. There will be lots of opportunities for you to play in the PGS rooms, the SMMC room, the DJ concert on Thursday night, and the 24/7 jamming that happens all over the hotel. And, if you're new to FAR-West we have a special room just for you- The New Faces in the

PGS Rooms now available

It's time to reserve your PGS room for FAR-West 2012! If you are planning to attend and haven't thought yet about hosting a PGS room, there's no time like now (and you can still get the early bird registration rates). Regardless of your role - artist, presenter, DJ or music supporter - hosting a PGS room is a great way to enjoy the conference and support its success.

Here are three good reasons why you should host a PGS room:

1. You provide a place for many fine musicians to perform.
2. You get to pick the music you'd like to hear in your room.
3. You connect with lots of artists, presenters, radio folks and other music supporters.

 

It's easy...if you've already registered for the conference, just log back in to the registration site and add a PGS room on the Merchandise page. If you haven't registered yet,  you can reserve a PGS room as part of the registration process. Just go to http://www.far-west.org/far-west-2012.html, click on Registration and pick your PGS days on the Merchandise page.

FAR-West Networking Center 2012

The FAR-West Networking Center is the hub of business connections among performers, presenters and others at the conference. Its the point where you have the greatest potential to meet the greatest number of conference attendees.

There are just 40 tables available in the Networking Center for the 2012 Conference. Half tables are $55; full tables are $90 for the duration of the conference. Electrical service is an additional $10. Tables can be reserved on the Conference Registration site and all exhibitors must be registered for the conference. In addition, exhibitors must submit a Networking Center Contract. (Download Networking 2012 contract here).

All audio/visual devices must have headphones -- no exceptions -- and live performances are prohibited. The Networking Center is not a performance area, nor a mini showcase. It is for conducting business. Consider having two CD or MP3 players with good quality headphones on your table for visitors to listen to your music. In case of difficulty with electrical connections or cords, make sure you have plenty of batteries for your players. Also consider bringing a laptop to show live performance video. Anything you show must be resident on your computer - the Networking Center does NOT have WIFI. As always, you are free to give away any of your merch.

Sales: If you wish to sell merchandise in the Networking Center, the California Board of Equalization requires vendors to get a Temporary Sellers Permit. These permits are free and the application can be downloaded from the BOE website. Scroll down and click on BOE 400 SPA to download the permit application. It takes about 2 to 4 weeks to get through the mail, but it can be handled at a local BOE office in a day. There is even a BOE office in Irvine (16715 Von Karman Avenue, Ste 200 Irvine, CA 92606, (949) 440-3473, Fax (949) 440-3482) if you needed to get one in a hurry  check their hours . Sellers do need to collect sales tax and the permits need to be visibly displayed.

Times: Load in time for the Networking Center is Friday morning from 9:45 am - 1:00 pm.  Load out is Sunday morning from 10 am - Noon. Networking Center business hours on Friday and Saturday are 2 pm - 5 pm.
