Musicians new to FAR-West can sign up to play in the New Voices private showcase room (based on availability, first registered, first booked) and all musicians can register for the Susanne Millsaps Coffee House performances. Performers for Millsaps are chosen in a lottery format. First drawing will take place in early June to fill half the slots.
There are many ways to make it work so that our conference will be of the most benefit to you:
--> Small Venues, House Concert Hosts, Arts Organizations, and Radio DJ's should write to Jeanette Lundgren to find out if you qualify for a registration discount!
--> Musicians who might have a financial concern can apply for a Larman Scholarship.
--> We also offer a Canadian only price to help with the exchange rate.
--> You could host a Private Showcase room, sleep in it, and charge a nominal fee to help cover costs.
--> You could also be a paid volunteer during the conference.
Here's our conference website with links to explain all.
Lots of great things are being planned for performers, music business professionals, and hosts ...
In the 1920's, record companies found their sales plummeting because of radio. They decided to look toward rural markets that radio couldn't service. American Epic is a documentary about this first intensive effort to record American roots music in the late 1920's and early 30's. It is also a collection of performances by modern musicians who were influenced by these recordings recorded on a reconstructed version of the original recording machine. All of these large, Rube Goldberesque, recording machines have long been lost. But in their research about the music, producer Allison McGourty and director Bernard MacMahon found a refurbished machine in Los Angeles that was almost operational. Persevering until they found the last missing component in a huge AT&T warehouse, they were able to interest an incredible crew of musicians in recording with it. They include Taj Mahal, Elton John, Steve Martin, Pokey Lafarge, Bettye LaVette, Los Lobos, and Rhiannon Giddens.American Epic will be broadcast on PBS on May 16th, 23rd, and 30th at 9:00 PM.
