Welcome to the FAR-West June 2018 Newsletter with updates for all....
Now that you’ve registered for the 2018 FAR-West Music Conference in Woodland Hills, California, at the Warner Center Marriott this October 11th to the 14th, it’s time to look at all of the opportunities to maximize your time.
WAIT! You haven’t registered yet? No worries ... it’s not too late to get a good deal! “Summer Special” rates are $185 for FAI members and $210 for non-members. Use this link to begin the registration process. IF you are not yet a member of FAI, you can Join here and get the discounted rate, as well as access to many other discounted FAI membership services. Once you're registered for our conference, you can use this link to book your hotel room at the Warner Center Marriott Woodland Hills. That page also gives info about hotel parking, internet, restaurants in the area, and travel to/from the various Los Angeles area airports. Even though the conference won't officially start until the 11th, please plan to join us on Wednesday evening, October 10th for an open stage event (details to come), and plan on staying later on Sunday, Oct. 14th for our 5th annual Storytelling Expo. The Expo (with the 2018 theme of #StoriesConnect) runs from 2 till 4 PM, so there's still plenty of time for those driving home. More details on these events to follow in the weeks ahead.
If you are a house concert or small venue host, a radio host or DJ, or Arts organization, you might qualify for a registration discount. Contact Jeanette Lundgren directly to find out.
Canadian attendees: To help offset the currency exchange, we have a special rate for Canadian attendees. Ignore the FAI/non-FAI options and choose the one that says Special Code on the registration page to get a discounted rate that helps with US/Canadian conversion rates. Then enter the Special Code for Canadians (OCanada).
Are funds a bit tight? The Roz & Howard Larman Memorial Scholarship was established to help qualifying musicians to attend our annual conference. Partial or full registration costs are available to help. Deadline to apply is July 31st.
Private Guerrilla Showcases: Don’t miss out on a wonderful opportunity to participate in this year’s conference! Hosting a PGS room is a great way to meet people, present yourself and others, and put yourself in charge of the music. The PGS floor buzzes with excitement and activity! The cost is $185 per night (which covers the room rental, taxes and FAR-West's insurance costs). Many hosts recoup costs by charging performers a small fee to present in their room. Also, you can sleep in your room on the nights that you host! Once you have registered for the conference, you are eligible to receive a list of PGS Hosts who are accepting artists in their rooms. This list is exclusive to registered attendees and will not be posted on the FAR West website. This list will be available by mid-July. For more information about PGS rooms, click here.
Susanne Millsaps Coffeehouse invitations have gone out to the group of artists registered by May 31st who were selected in the first random drawing for performance slots. Those not chosen in the first round and all artists registered by August 5th will be eligible for the second round drawing.
If you are a first timer at FAR-West, you are eligible to participate in the New Voices in the West PGS Showcase. Just indicate on your registration that you are a first-timer and you want to perform in New Voices. Invitations to perform will be sent to newcomers in the order they register for the conference. Performance slots will be awarded in the order that invitees respond. This process will continue until all performance slots are filled. So to make sure you secure a “prime time” spot, register as soon as you can and respond to the invitation without delay! More Information about the New Voices PGS room is here.
Panels & Workshops are a large part of the educational opportunities at our conference. We are seeking your input on specific programs and topics you are interested in. We are also accepting workshop submissions. Forms for the survey and workshop submissions can be found at this link. The deadline for survey and workshop submissions is June 30th, 2018.
Check out our marketing discounts and our Sponsorship Opportunities. There are plenty of low cost / high visibility options to help promote your act or brand including a 20% discount when purchasing two or more qualifying options.
Every attendee receives a copy of our Official Program Book. Included are a schedule of conference events, showcase information, a listing of panels and workshops, the Best of the West Awards, Networking Center exhibitors, and a directory of attendees. Folks have been known to keep the directory as a reference tool long after the conference. What better way to be remembered than with an ad in the program book? There are a variety of ad options, including the outside back cover, full page color ads placed at the beginning of the book, and full, half or quarter page black and white ads placed throughout the book. Prices start at $55 for a quarter page ad. The Deadline to submit ad artwork is Friday, Sept. 7th, 2018.
When you check-in at our conference, the program book will be one of the items in your tote bag. The FAR-West Tote Bag is a great way to put your name, CD, showcase schedule, logo or any other promotional items in front of your fellow folkies. For $110, your name or logo can be advertised on the tote bag itself, plus an item of your choice inserted into the bag (flyers up to 8 ½ x 11 inches, or the other goodies mentioned above). You can also choose to just include a tote bag insert for $65. Whichever tote bag choice you make, you will need to provide approximately (our current best guess - quantity to be be confirmed later this summer) 300 insert items for the tote bag stuffing party on Thursday afternoon of our conference, and if you want to be a Tote Bag Sponsor, the deadline for artwork is August 31st.
Last but not least, your presence at a table in our Networking Center is a fantastic way to get face-to-face with your fellow conference participants. The FAR-West Networking Center is more than just an "Exhibit Hall" ... it's the hub of business connections among performers, presenters and other attendees. Our Networking Center is the place where you have the greatest potential to network and share information with other conference attendees. Tables can be reserved at $55 for a half table or $90 for a full table. Besides displaying posters, music, or other merchandise, you can also set up laptops, tablets, or mp3 players (with headphones please) to share your music or performances. Electrical hookups are available for $10. If you provide your own hotspot, you can set your laptop or tablet to your YouTube channel or anywhere else your music and videos are featured.
Your registration includes the Best of the West Luncheon. Honorees this year include trend-setting producer and singer-songwriter Wendy Waldman, and Bob Riskin, owner and chief maverick at the West Coast musical landmark McCabe’s Guitar Shop of Santa Monica, California. The Best of the West Luncheon is always a conference highlight and a chance to recognize some of the people who help promote folk music and traditions in our region. Read the full 2018 BoTW Press Release here.
Don’t forget that you can log back in to your registration at any time to make changes or add opportunities, but remember that some of the options have deadlines or are available only in a limited number. Don’t wait too long!
