FAR-WEST STORYTELLING EXPO 2018 PRESENTS
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2:00 to 4:00 PM
On Sunday afternoon, October 14th, FAR-West will host the 5th annual Storytelling Expo, featuring some of the best storytellers from the local region. Mary Anne Moorman, (a.k.a. Auntmama) returns as hostess and as a featured storyteller, together with Nick Smith, who co-coordinated this year’s Expo and is also a featured teller.
The folk art of storytelling is nearly as old as humankind, a way to carry forward the wisdom, compassion, and humor of our collective and individual experiences. Sometimes stories are set to music, sometimes they are acted out, and sometimes they are simply told with skill. If you haven’t enjoyed an afternoon of storytelling, then you’ll be in for a treat as a few catchy images weave into your heart to become part of your own story.
Auntmama (Mary Anne Moorman): The backbone of the FAR-West Storytelling Expo, Auntmama brings her original Appalachian tales to radio and festivals. Her word art rolls from Civil Rights through ghostly tales onto tips for living with mental illness. She writes stories for musicians, serves as a performance coach, teller, and folk music DJ, accumulating awards and accolades for her wit and wisdom. Auntmama is dedicated to community and knitting spoken words into the fiber of folk music festivals.
Nick Smith: A teller of historical tales and traditional stories from around the world, sometimes showing audiences that they only think they know which is which. Together with Mary Anne Moorman, Nick Smith is the 2018 Storytelling Expo Co-Coordinator.
Barbara G. Wong: Whether it’s a tale about a Chinese dragon told at the Getty, or a true story about a Day in the Life of an LA Street Vendor told at a law firm for its Diversity Day, Barbara connects with audiences in libraries, schools, museums, festivals and community events. She tells multicultural and spooky tales, personal stories about growing up Chinese-Cuban-American. Her timeless tales - often filled with wonder, humor and wisdom - speak to the hearts of young and old alike.
Bill Berry: Snazzy, sketchy, sharp-witted singer/songwriter Bill Berry writes story songs which cheerfully celebrate the car wreck lifestyles of those fumbling with love’s ruins and lighting small fires on big castaway islands of hope.
Karen Golden: Audiences from coast to coast have applauded Karen’s work as a performer, published author, teacher and award winning recording artist. Funny, inspiring, outrageous and real!
Scott and Johanna Hongell-Darsee: This duo performs early traditional Scandinavian/Celtic ballads and tales. Their wanderings have led them from Finland and Iowa respectively - through Europe, Scandinavia, India, and the U.S. On the way they have collected stories and songs that explore the links between Scandinavian, Celtic, North American and other story singing traditions. Scott and Johanna perform across the U.S. at festivals, theatres, arts councils, universities, schools, libraries, and live broadcasts.
Ty Fance: This NPR favorite performs at The Story Salon, The Altadena Coffee Gallery Backstage Theater. Author of ten autobiographical short stories entitled “Off My Head and Over The Fence”.
